(From the Centre County Genealogical Society) It is not known when Francis Steele
emigrated to America. He was born in Northern Ireland in 1741 and was married
in Pennsylvania in 1771. Francis and Margaret Crow were married by a minister
of the Church of England. They were living in Warwick Furnace, Chester County,
Pennsylvania when Francis was called up by the Pennsylvania Militia. He was commissioned
an Ensign of a company of foot. The commission is dated May 31, 1777. An extract
of a listing of officers is as follows:

Francis was three (3) times in service for 2 months each time for total service
time of 6 months. He was drafted once and twice he substituted for other men
who were called up. He served under General Irvin. He was at the Battle of Brandywine
and participated in a skirmish near Wilmington, Delaware.
After the war, Francis and Margaret lived in Philadelphia and Myerstown, and
then they moved to Centre County where they lived on a farm.
Testimonials in Margaret Steele's declaration for a widow's pension indicate
the following residences.
"For some time" in Brandywine, Chester County (signed Nathan Grier
VDM; Nov. 4th - 1789).
"For some considerable time" in Bellefonte, Centre County (signed Henry
R. Wilson VDM; March 10th 1806).
"Was several years in our congregation" (signed) William A. Boyd V.
D. M. and Pastor of Spruce Creek and Sinking Valleys. Certified at Spruce Creek,
Huntingdon County; October 22nd 1817.
The spelling of "Steele" and "Steel" are used at the discretion
of the speller. Francis' signature appears on his will and is spelled "Steele."
His commision and other militia records spell his name "Steel." Francis'
son Martin spelled his name "Steel" and Martin's son Robert M. reverted
to "Steele." Take your choice!

OBIT (Huntington Herald Dispatch, Nov 26, 1921): After funeral rites are observed
at the late home in this city, the body of J. N. Steele 75, who died yesterday
morning after a brief illness, will be taken to Wellston, O. Services will be
held at the Methodist church there and interment will be made at the Wellston
cemetery. Mr. Steele had resided in this city for the past eight years, living
with his son, E. D. Steele at 1207 Ninth Avenue. He is survived by three sons,
E. D. and R. R. Steele, local undertakers, John D. of Hamden, 0., one daughter,
Mrs. Rhoda Braley of Ewington, O., a sister, Mrs. R.A. Swearingen of West Carrollton,
0., and one brother, William Steele of Cambridge 0. He was born in Pennsylvania,
May 18 1846 and while very young moved to Jackson County, 0., Where he obtained
his early education. He was graduated with a law degree but never practiced,
although he was admitted to the bar. For twenty-eight years he was active in
schoolwork, both in his old home at Wellston and in the Ohio State schools. After
coming to Huntington he retired from active work. The funeral services are to
be held here at the late residence at four o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. C.
E. Goodwin will conduct the services.

OBIT: John D. Steele, 73, 215 1/2 South First, died Wednesday morning at the
Ponca City Hospital as the result of a heart attack which he suffered last week.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Relatives out of the city were being contacted.
The E. M. Trout and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Steele had
made his home in Ponca City for approximately one year. He came here from Tonkawa
where he had lived for a number of years. He was admitted to the hospital January

Funeral services for John D. Steele, 73, 215 1/2 South First, who died Wednesday
in the Ponca City Hospital as the result of heart attack, were held Friday morning
in the E. M. Trout Funeral Home. The Rev. Byron Cravens officiated at the 11
o'clock service and burial was in the IOOF Cemetery. Pall bearers were A. R.
Smith, Claude Ouerry Russell Harris, C. a. Smith, Wayne VanVoris and Walter Schatz,
all of Tonkawa. Steele was born Dec. 22, 1879, at Ratchford, Ohio (sic). He had
been a resident of Ponca City for 12 years and before retirement was a carpenter.
